WORLDWIDE SERVICE PROJECTS – Kiwanis International Over the past 2 decades Glendale Kiwanis has proudly partnered with Kiwanis International andUnicef in two global life-changing projects:
The EliMiNatTe Project– Through The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT)—a deadly disease that steals the lives of innocent babies and often their mothers. Kiwanis International reached our fundraising goal, raising US$110 million in cash and pledges. Glendale Kiwanis played a significant part in this effort by raising over $200,000 to assist in eliminating this dread disease. We turned promises into funding; funding into vaccines; and vaccines into lives saved and futures protected. The end of this disease means the beginning of better health for so many of these families. Starting in 2010 with 46 countries struggling with hundreds of thousands of deaths yearly, we are down to 12 countries still battling the disease. But through our continued partnership Kiwanis and Unicef are ensuring these countries will also eliminate the disease.
IDD (Iodine Deficiency Disorder) Project– Thanks to Kiwanis International’s Worldwide Service Project, great strides have been made toward the goal of eliminating iodine deficiency worldwide. Working with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, the entire Kiwanis family joined together to raise funds to help eliminate the problem of iodine deficiency by supporting salt iodization, testing and monitoring, and community outreach and education. Through the dedication and hard work of the Kiwanis family, not only in raising money but also in raising awareness of the problem and motivating governments and industry to act, millions of children have been protected against the invisible but devastating effects of iodine deficiency. The Kiwanis family has raised more than US$100 million to eliminate iodine deficiency disorders–heralded as one of the most successful health initiatives in the world.
