100 Years of Serving the Glendale, California Community
Kiwanis Club of Glendale has been a driving force since 1922 in improving the quality of life in our community, especially for children. Current projects include academic scholarships, Americanism essay contest in local middle schools, Guest Chef at Path Achieve Glendale (monthly), car seat safety inspection with CHP and GPD (bi-monthly), repackaging rice and beans for Salvation Army distribution (quarterly – 1 ton of each), Glendale Kiwanis Grill Team (cooking for numerous events). We sponsor the K-Kids Club at Fremont Elementary School, Verdugo Woodlands Elementary, Salem Lutheran School, Key Clubs at Holy Family High School and at Hoover High School, Circle K at Glendale College, and the Aktion Club of Glendale at GAR, as well as Boy Scout Troop 125, a little league baseball team and an AYSO soccer team. Grants are given to MANY organizations, programs, and causes, including: Ascencia, Character and Ethics Youth Leadership Conference, College View School (chorus performances and educational field trip), COPS For Kids, CV Prom Plus, Foothill Autism Alliance, Glendale Adventist Medical Center, Glendale Association for the Retarded, Glendale Educational Foundation, Glendale Family YMCA, Glendale Healthy Kids, Glendale Memorial Hospital, Glendale Police Foundation, Glendale Public Library, GUSD, GlendaleArts, Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation, Kiwanis International Foundation, Elementary School Bring Up Grades BUG program, K-Kids, Builders Clubs, Key Clubs, Circle K, Salvation Army Glendale Corps, Stepping Stone Players, Tech Trek, YWCA of Glendale, and more than 30 other organizations annually who benefit financially as Duck Buddy groups with our Kiwanis Incredible Duck Splash.
Kiwanians are volunteerschanging the world through service. Kiwanis Members help shelter the homeless, feed the hungry, mentor the disadvantaged, care for the sick, build playgrounds, and much more. No problem is too big or too small. Why? Because by working together, many can achieve what one person cannot accomplish alone.
Since Kiwanis first came to the West Coast in 1917, Kiwanis members of California, Nevada, and Hawaii have been making a positive impact on the communities and people around them. From disaster relief efforts to youth scholarship programs, being in Kiwanis is all about “giving back.”
With more than 15,000 Kiwanis members (and more than 48,000 members in our Service Leadership Programs), the Cal-Nev-Ha District is the biggest in Kiwanis International. Our clubs and members contribute in excess of $5,300,000 and 850,000 volunteer service hours to their communities each year! Together, we ARE changing the world, one child and one community at a time. Kiwanis members are guided by the six permanent Objects of Kiwanis International. These key principles were approved by Kiwanis club delegates at the 1924 Convention in Denver, Colorado. Although many years and countless leaders have come and gone since then, these Objects have always remained unchanged:
· To give importance to the human and spiritual rather than the material values of life.· To encourage living by the Golden Rule.· To promote higher social, business, and professional standards.· To encourage and be servant leaders.· To build Kiwanis clubs that build lasting friendships and serve and strengthen local communities.· To promote justice, patriotism, and goodwill.
Founded in 1915, Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. Kiwanis International and its service leadership programs for young people, including Circle K, Key Club, Key Leader, Builders Club, K-Kids, Kiwanis Junior and Aktion Club dedicate more than 19 million volunteer hours and invest US$100 million to strengthen communities and serve children annually. The Kiwanis International family comprises 600,000 adult and youth members and 8,600 clubs in 96 countries and geographic areas. Kiwanis members make their mark by responding to the needs of their communities and pooling their resources to address worldwide issues.
Globally, Kiwanis International was successful in its humanitarian efforts in eliminating iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), through the Worldwide Service Project, a US$100+ million campaign in partnership with UNICEF, which began in 1994 and concluded in 2000. It is now embarking, again with UNICEF, on the EliMiNaTe project to eliminate Maternal and Neo-natal Tetanus worldwide. For more information about Kiwanis International, please visit www.kiwanis.org.
